Here are simple, effective sleep tips that support better rest for babies and toddlers:
1. Create a Consistent Bedtime Routine
A predictable routine helps signal to your baby that sleep is coming and children THRIVE on a routine.
Keep it simple and repeatable:
Bath (optional)
Pajamas
Feeding
Book or quiet snuggles
Into crib awake
Consistency is more important than length.
2. Focus on the Sleep Environment
A calm, sleep-friendly space makes a big difference.
Aim for:
A very dark room (blackout curtains are key)
White noise to reduce disruptions
A comfortable, clutter-free sleep space
Even small amounts of light can interfere with falling and staying asleep.
3. Avoid Overtiredness
When babies stay awake too long, their bodies release stress hormones, making sleep harder.
Well-timed sleep =
Easier bedtime
Fewer night wakings
Better naps
If child does not get enough daytime sleep, then move up bedtime to avoid overtiredness.
4. Don’t Be Afraid of an Early Bedtime
Many babies and toddlers do best with bedtimes before 7:30PM.
Earlier bedtime often leads to:
Better sleep overnight
Fewer false starts
Less overtiredness

5. Support Independent Sleep Skills (Gently)
Helping babies learn to fall asleep in their sleep space can improve overall sleep.
This doesn’t have to mean “cry it out” and there are many gentle, responsive approaches.
6. Keep Night Wakings Calm and Boring
If your baby wakes up overnight:
Keep lights low
Interactions minimal
Voices quiet
Try not to feed right away
This helps reinforce that nighttime is for sleep.
7. Be Consistent (Progress Over Perfection)
Sleep improvements don’t come from doing things perfectly. They come from doing things consistently.
Small, repeatable habits add up to big changes over time. If you can stay consistent for 3-5 nights in a row, you WILL see improved sleep.
8. Daytime Matters Too
Active, bright daytime hours help regulate your baby’s internal clock.
During the day:
Get natural light exposure
Encourage movement and play
Offer feeds at regular intervals
Ensure they are getting the right number of hours of daytime sleep to protect night time sleeping (rescue naps if needed!)
This sets the foundation for better nights.
9. Optimize Nap Conditions
Good naps don’t just happen.
Use the same dark environment as nighttime
Aim for appropriate nap timing based on age
They will figure out night time sleeping first and once they can sleep well at night, that’s when great naps will come.
10. Start With the Basics Before Overcomplicating
Before assuming something more complex is going on, check:
Is the room dark enough?
Is bedtime too late?
Is your baby overtired?
Often, these foundational pieces make the biggest difference.
