Breastfeeding: More Than Just Milk

August is National Breastfeeding Month, with the 1st-7th being Breastfeeding Week! What a time to celebrate this incredible way to nourish and bond with your baby. But breastfeeding is more than just milk; it's a journey filled with many emotions, challenges, and triumphs. We understand that societal pressures and expectations can make breastfeeding feel overwhelming. Here at Mind Body Baby, we want to remind you that your mental health matters, too. Your well-being is our priority, and we support your decision, whether you choose to breastfeed, pump, or formula feed.

Mental Health and Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding can be a beautiful experience, fostering a deep connection between mother and child. However, it's not always sunshine and rainbows. The emotional rollercoaster of breastfeeding is real. Some days may leave you feeling empowered and fulfilled, and one question we often get from breastfeeding mothers is, "Should I Breastfeed Past a Year?" "Is it normal?" Absolutely! The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding for two years and beyond, as long as both mother and baby are happy and healthy! However, breastfeeding may not be best for you and your baby, and that is perfectly okay, too! It may bring frustration and inadequacy, and it's important to remember that your mental health matters most! Some moms may thrive on breastfeeding, while others may find it emotionally draining, and still others may not be able to at all for a variety of reasons. There's no shame in needing a break, pumping instead of feeding directly or choosing formula.

Breastfeeding Disparities

Did you know that Black mothers have statistically lower breastfeeding rates? This is a complex issue with multifaceted causes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Black infants are less likely to be breastfed than infants of other racial and ethnic groups.

Potential contributing factors to this disparity include:

  • Healthcare access and quality: Black women may face barriers to prenatal care, lactation support, and breastfeeding education, and we often see this injustice in our own community.

  • Historical and systemic racism: The legacy of discrimination and mistrust in the healthcare system can impact breastfeeding decisions and outcomes.

  • Socioeconomic factors: Income, education, and employment status can influence breastfeeding initiation and duration.

MindBodyBaby's doula program addresses these issues by providing culturally competent support and guidance to Black mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey. Our doulas can help you navigate challenges and connect with resources throughout the Charlotte area. Of the 15 mothers we served in our doula program last year, 100% of the Black mothers with a breastfeeding goal latched, and 80% were still successfully breastfeeding at three months.
